So laypersons and professionals should be aware of any changes so that they are not subjected to higher fines or license suspensions.

Lowering the Speed Limits

With some changes, the speed limit varied in many categories:

  • Residential and school zones: The speed limit has been set at 30 km/h from 40 km/h.
  • Urban freeways: Speeds have been restricted from 120 to 100 km/h.

Whereas calling or talking must be avoided as much as possible, drivers are free to use hands-free options if necessary.

New Demerit System Rules

The AARTO system had some recent changes:

  • When a person is credited with 12 demerit points, their driving licence will be suspended for a period of 3 months.
  • A licence will be cancelled after the third such suspension and will have to be reapplied for.
  • Fines paid within 32 days will only be charged 50% of their face value.

Additionally, drivers can track through an online system the points accrued and stay notified of any changes affecting their record.
