SASSA R5,000 Pension 2025: A welcomed and surprising announcement in 2025 saw SASSA confirming the rights for pension increase to R3,070 for Older Persons Grants from July 2025. Budget constraints still hinder fulfillment of calls for R5,000, but the increase is a step toward lessening financial pressures upon the elderly.
Who Is Eligible For The Increased Grant?
One must meet the usual SASSA criteria in order to apply for the new and improved pension:
- Age: 60–74 years for Older Persons Grant, with a slight increase if one is 75 and above.
- Citizenship: South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
- Means Test: Income per month below R8,070 (single) and R16,140 (married) with assets within set limits.
- Residency: Not residing in state-funded institutions.
Those already on the Older Persons Grant are not going to need to apply again for this increased amount; instead, beginning 2 July 2025, their pension accounts will automatically be credited with R3,070.
