SASSA R500 Grant 2025: Rumors started doing the rounds online, that SASSA is going to introduce a new one time grant R500 in 2025. SASSA has, however, denied that there is any such new R500 Grant being offered this year. As confirmed in the February media statement, SASSA reiterated that beneficiaries can only rely on official government sources and remain wary of opportunistic scammers preying on vulnerable groups.
Why The Rumors Are Spreading
Adding to the cost-of-living crisis has been an occasion for callings for extra financial aid, from where misleading posts on WhatsApp and Facebook circulated, deceiving the majority into believing another R500 grant was in pipeline. Some of these scam messages asked recipients even to share personal details-an act that SASSA vehemently condemns-and warns against. This misinformation stems from the confusion such legitimate grant increases created when they came into effect on April 2025, including a 5.8% increase for Older Persons, Disability, War Veterans, Foster Care, and Child Support grants.
What’s Official For 2025
With the 2025 Framework Amended during the Revision of the National Budget, the following SASSA grants have received slight increases and not new top-up amounts:
- Old-age (persons between 60 and 74 years) and Disability grants increased to R2,315;
- The Old-age grant for persons 75 and older is now R2,335
- Child Support is R560, and Foster Care is R1,250.
There is no R500 top-up grant. The only “top-up” of such a nature is the Grant-in-Aid of R560, which supports recipients requiring full-time care, but it is not new for 2025.
How To Stay Safe
To protect yourself, family, and friends:
- Always go to official SASSA sites, such as the SASSA website, local offices, or aptly trusted toll-free numbers.
- Never divulge bank account numbers, PINs, or identity numbers if such details have been solicited in response to offers of a new R500 grant.
- Keep in mind that any increase for any official grant is public knowledge, as it will be advertised in newspapers and not passed along via private forwards.
SASSA further mentioned that contrary to certain fake claims, no grant will be terminated, and the gold cards will remain valid.
