SASSA Grant Payments Delayed : More Than 210,000 SASSA Grant Recipients Affected : Authorities have confirmed that up to 210,000 plus SASSA grant beneficiaries were kept from receiving their payments in the month of July 2025. These payments were fairly not suspended but were instead voluntarily kept on the backburner while suspects underwent income verification in terms of a new set of controls against fraud.

Why Were Payments Delayed?

In April 2025, SASSA started working with registered credit bureaus to cross-check grant recipients against their financial records. Approximately 210,000 beneficiaries were flagged on the basis of records indicating undeclared income. The beneficiaries were then requested to personally report to the local SASSA offices within 30 days to verify sources of income, the process during which payments for the grants are delayed rather than being canceled. 

Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has apologised for the poor communication, saying that the majority of beneficiaries weren’t adequately informed before their payments were delayed.

When Will Payments Resume?

According to SASSA officials, beneficiaries under verification shall receive their July payments by the mid of July, if not delayed. The spokesperson went on to explain that the verification process actually entails the account being flagged, whereby a payment will not be paid on 3 July but shall be delayed by 5 more days. A scheme whereby community leaders in Khayelitsha and other areas are coordinating with SASSA personnel ensures that verification qualified to individuals complete the verification and payments to pending granting. 

How To Check If Affected

  • Await an SMS or a letter from SASSA instructing you to proceed to any of their offices locally.
  • If the date to appear has already passed, call the toll-free number of SASSA at 0800 60 10 11 or go to the nearest service point.
  • Bring along income proof in the form of pay slips, bank statements, and your identity document for verification.
  • When done, the payment will be credited within a week.
  • Keep your eyes open for any further communication. SASSA exhortation considers all cooperation in avoiding any payment delay in the future.

Real-World Impact And Emotional Toll

Missing a grant generally being the monthly income for the aged is usually a setback beyond characterizing. A pensioner in Ennerdale said that withholding a payment for a slight financial gift delayed medication payments ([SowetanLIVE][6]). Another beneficiary stated that he missed out on a burial society payment of R600, increasing pressure on the household.

SASSA stated that it was not a punitive measure and resumed payments when a beneficiary finished the verification. It emphasized further that it became a recipient’s duty to update his information should his personal or financial circumstances change then. 

What You Should Do Now

  • Do not panic- payments are not cancelled. They are just delayed.
  • Answer SASSA communication promptly and complete verification. 
  • Make sure your personal details and bank information are up to date to avoid disruption.
  • Do not engage any fake messages or demands; SASSA will never ask for PINs or fees. 
  • If you are still not paid after verification, ensure to follow it up within seven days, either at the office or by phone or using online services.
