Big Boost For Foster Parents: SASSA To Pay R5,000 By 29 July 2025, Check If You Qualify

SASSA Foster Care Grant 2025: For once, foster caregivers could breathe easy. The Special Security Agency (SASSA) has come out with a pay-out of an extra R5,000 over and above the monthly R1,250 grant for foster care. This has to be credited by Tuesday, 29 July 2025. The announcement indicates that there is a serious intention in supporting a peculiar role that foster families bear in the lives of vulnerable children.

Two Parts Payment

Here is the operation of how this July payout would work:

  • Regular R1,250 Foster Care Grant: credited Friday, 25 July as per standard grant cycle along with Child Grants for Disability, Child Support, and Care Dependency.
  • Special R5,000 Boost: an additional one-time payment that must be made by Tuesday, 29 July to provide immediate relief for school expenses, uniforms, transport, or other vital needs.

Foster caregivers are not required to reapply if their foster care grant is active as funds will automatically be deposited into their accounts or SASSA cards.

Who’s Eligible?

To be eligible for this double payment, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must be a registered foster parent under the Children’s Act, caring for a child under 18 years.
  • The foster care grant should already be approved and it is an active grant.
  • No extra forms are required as it is an automatic payment of R5,000 granted to all foster parents to assist with the care of the children at home.

All qualifying foster parents will indeed receive R6,250 by the end of July.

How You Will Receive It

The payments, whether made through the bank or SASSA Gold/Black Card, are automatically cleared:

  • R1,250 will clear around 25 July.
  • The additional R5,000 will clear by 29 July.

So, to avoid any delay or redirection in payments, check and update your bank details beforehand. SASSA recommends doing so at least 1 week before the payments.

Why This Matters

Foster families often have to confront expenses that appear suddenly: education, healthcare, food and basics. This timely R5,000 boost:

  • Eases sudden financial pressure;
  • Meets early costs relevant to school going on ahead of the new term;
  • Shows SASSA is cognizant of the special needs of foster caregivers.

A foster care grant amount of R1,250 has been standard since 1 April 2024. Yet, this once-off boost is testament to how SASSA remains committed toward assisting foster caregivers in practical, meaningful ways.

What You Should Do Now

  • Check your bank/card details on the SASSA portal or at local offices.
  • Mark two dates: 25 July (regular R1,250) and 29 July (R5,000 bonus).
  • Plan withdrawals realistically, avoiding ATM queues, and ensuring funds last.
  • Get ready for your payment notification through SMS or a bank alert.
  • Alert SASSA or visit the nearest office should you encounter any problems.
