This is one among multiple measures for seniors who are wise and growing cost-of-living and inflation. The increased money will be released to needy low-income seniors from July 2025, with the raising of the Guaranteed Income Supplement by $1,395.
What is the GIS?
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is a monthly NON-TAXABLE payment made to persons receiving an old age security income that is low. The payment is to supplement this income for low-income elderly persons who, for the most part, rely on OAS for income and have either insufficient or no other income from retirement.
With this increase, top-ups of up to $1,395 a year or about $116.25 per month may be paid to beneficiaries commencing in July 2025.
Who Is Eligible for the GIS Raise?
The relative criteria for seniors to be considered eligible for the new increased GIS amount are:
- 65 years of age or older
- Receiving an OAS pension
- Income from other sources below the maximum amount set by the government
Income lineup for 2025 is the following:
- Single seniors: With income less than $21,648.00.
- Married/common-law couples (both receiving OAS): Combined incomes less than $28,560.
- One receiving OAS and the other not: Combined incomes less than $51,408.00.
When Will the New Payments Be Initiated?
Starting from July 2025, all existing GIS holders should be subject to the additional payments being disbursed automatically, along established criteria. As long as your information is all updated, you shall not be required to re-apply.
New candidates may submit applications to Service Canada: online, by mail, or in person. Be sure to give current income info because GIS eligibility gets determined based on your last tax return.
