Mid-year cheers for Canadian taxpayers as the Canada Revenue Agency CRA has announced an instalment of the GST/HST credit payable in July 2025. Depending on eligibility, up to $179 could be paid out to any individual or family as a compensation for sales taxes levied federal and provincial-wise on goods and services.
What is the GST/HST credit?
The GST/HST credit is a quarterly payment made by the CRA to persons and families with low to modest incomes, reflecting a non-taxable amount to compensate them with the refund of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) charging made to them in the year under review. The amount is marginally dependent on income, marital status, and also the number of children in that household.
July 2025 payment
The CRA now states, the next GST/HST credit payment date is July 5, 2025. TDS payments of the credit are sent to account holders through deposit or by way of cheque for mailing, whichever way the recipient has agreed to accept. Should delay of more than 10 days be suffered after the official payment date, one should contact CRA or go to the My Account online portal.
Who Can Get the \$179 Benefit?
For the GST/HST credit for July 2025, you must:
- Be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes
- 18 years old or more
- File your 2024 income tax return
- Meet income threshold requirements
Generally, single individuals who make approximately less than \$53,000 income annually and families who make less than \$60,000-\$70,000 in income (depends on the number of children) are eligible.
How Much Will You Get?
The base amount of payment is \$179, but it can increase with family size:
- \$179 for single individuals
- Up to \$467 for married/common-law couples
- An additional \$179 for each eligible child under 19
When you file your income tax return, CRA will automatically assess your eligibility. Hence, there is no separate application to make.
